Chapter 6 - A Narrow Escape
The next morning, Abby and Molly woke to a familiar voice.
“Hey there! Abby. Molly.”
“Radar! Hiya Radar,” called Molly.
“I’ve been worried about you since your tree crashed,” said Radar. “I’m so glad I found you!”
Spunky growled.
“It’s okay Spunky. This is Radar, a friend from the forest,” said Molly, introducing Radar.
“Is our tree ruined?” asked Abby.
“Yes,” said Radar. “Washed away in the storm.”
Spunky’s pendant rattled. He did not trust Radar, so he excused himself and trotted toward the river.
“Our basket, with us in it, was thrown into the river. Spunky saved us,” explained Molly. “And we have been…”
Molly didn’t finish. Spunky burst through the bushes, scooped up Molly and Abby and sprinted off.
“Bee. Come,” Spunky called back.
Radar followed but could barely keep up. Spunky is really fast.
Spunky ran up along the river, around huge rocks and under branches. He did not stop until he jumped over a fallen tree that blocked the view of a cave at the bottom of a cliff.
“In there. Safe!” panted Spunky. While Molly and Abby trotted to the cave, he checked his pendant. All quiet.
Spunky refused to come into the cave until he was sure they had not been followed. There was no way he was going to let his friends get hit with quills from those flying beasts.
As the sun set, Radar glowed a faint pinky-purple light.
“I didn’t know that was possible,” said Molly. “It’s beautiful.”
“Thanks,” said Radar. “Bee scouts are different from worker bees. We can glow in the dark. And we can send short messages back to the hive if we’re within the forest.”
Spunky came into the cave, and laid down. He was so big he blocked the entrance to the cave.
“What happened Spunky? Why did you carry us here so suddenly?” asked Molly.
“More thieves. Small squad,” answered Spunky. “Near the falls.”
Spunky’s pendant had rattled <<NOW>> <<UP>> <<OVER>> and he knew he had to get Molly and Abby UP river NOW. He knew it was safe to stop when he leapt OVER the tree and saw the cave.
“I don’t think they saw me. But we must keep watch.”
