Chapter 7 - Sending a Message

“Oh this is awful,” cried Abby.  “Our basket is hanging in the bushes right under their noses.  What if they find it?”

“Can’t go back,” answered Spunky.  “Not yet.”

“I can scout it out in the morning,” said Radar.  “See if they are gone.”

Spunky gave himself a shake and freed up enough fur to keep the cave comfy-cozy warm.  Spunky kept watch through the night.  It was quiet, except for an early morning rain.

Radar buzzed down to the clearing by the river before Molly and Abby were awake.

“Bees easily dodge raindrops,” Radar explained to Spunky.  “Won’t be long.”

Molly and Abby were awake by the time Radar returned.

“The squad of thieves is huddled in the clearing.  They are soaking wet and very miserable,” reported Radar.

“Why wouldn’t they hide in Spunky’s den?” asked Abby.

“They can’t see it, Abby,” explained Molly.  “They don’t know it’s there.  So I don’t think they will find our basket either.”

“How can we be sure, Molly?” asked Abby, sobbing.  “Our beautiful basket.  It’s our home.  And, and… they keep trying to steal our buttons.”

“Why do they want your buttons?” asked Radar.  “Is there something special about them?”

“Yeah, kinda,” answered Abby, wiping away a tear.  “They are magic.  But we didn’t know.  We just thought they were pretty.”

“You have magic buttons?” asked Radar, surprised.  “That would explain why they want them.”

“But now what do we do?  We can’t give them our buttons.  How can we stop them?” asked Abby.

“It’s time to get a message to Mama Owl,” said Radar.

“I will send a message to others of the bee patrol,” said Radar.  “They will come.”

“Whoa Bee, wait!” grumbled Spunky.  “Not safe.”

“It’s in code.  Code only bees understand,” explained Radar.  “Others will not intercept it.”

“Can’t be too safe,” Spunky said and he went to patrol the area.

Radar sent off a set of coordinates.  “That should do it.  Now we wait.”

“We can solutioneer while we wait,” said Molly.  “We can’t just sit here.”

“Solutioneer?  What’s that?” asked Radar.

“Oh, solutioneer is when you think together as a team,” answered Molly.  “The answers are always better.  Abby and I have always done it.  Spunky joins us sometimes.  So can you.”

“We need more information about the porcupine tornados,” said Abby.

“But we can’t get to the basket library,” argued Molly.

“Maybe Radar can sneak in and find out more,” suggested Abby.

“Sorry.  Bees cannot read.  We are audio only,” apologized Radar.  “And we don’t want to lead them to the basket.”
