Chapter 9 - Another Narrow Escape

A beam of daylight shone through a small hole far above them.

“We are safe for the moment,” said Molly.  “We must think.”

A few minutes later, they heard Spunky howl.

“Oh no!  Spunky’s hurt, and we’re stuck in here,” Abby said, trying not to cry.

“There has to be another way out,” said Molly, looking up at the daylight.  “Water is dripping from that hole.”

“It’s too high to reach,” said Abby, wiping her tears away.

“But the water must get to the river somewhere,” said Molly.  “Let’s follow the trickle.”

The small cavern quickly narrowed into a tunnel.

“It’s a good thing we are small,” said Molly.

The deeper they crawled down the tunnel, the darker it got.

“We need to turn back.  We can’t see anything,” said Abby.

Almost as if by request, Abby’s oval button headband started to glow.

“Oh, what a pretty pinky-purple color,” said Molly, smiling.  “It’s just like Radar’s glow.”

Slowly they moved along the tunnel, Abby leading the way.

“Do you hear that?” asked Molly.  “I think we are close to the river.”

“Look,” said Abby, pointing not far up ahead.  “Daylight.”

Wet and tired, the pair of cats crawled onto a little ledge overlooking the river.  Abby’s headband button glow turned off.

“We should rest a bit before we climb down,” added Molly, looking over the ledge.  “We don’t want to fall into the river.  The cliff looks slippery.”

Abby stretched and rolled onto her back.

“Maybe we should climb up,” suggested Abby.  “It looks much shorter.”

“Yes it does,” agreed Molly.  “Up it is.”

They rested for a few minutes then climbed to the top of the cliff.

“That wasn’t so bad,” said Abby.  “Now to find Spunky and Radar.”

“I’m glad we don’t have to crawl anymore,” Molly said, trotting along the top of the cliff.

“Oh yes, trotting is so much nicer,” agreed Abby.

“Quicker too,” added Molly.

Just before dark the pair turned a corner at the bottom of a steep hill.

“Molly!  Abby!  You’re here!” Radar buzzed excitedly.  “We’ve been so worried.  We’ve been searching for you.  Spunky look!”

In an instant Molly and Abby were gathered up in a hug and slobbered with kisses.
