Description

Aired September 25, 2023.

On Saturday, October 14, Australians will vote in an historic referendum to decide whether to change the constitution to recognise the indigenous people of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Voice.

The proposal put forward states the voice may make representations to the parliament and the government on “matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples”, and that the parliament shall, subject to the constitution, have power to make laws with respect to matter relating to the voice, including its composition, functions, powers and procedures.

Australia has a history of taking referendums seriously and people want to make an informed choice.

With early voting starting next week, we’ll be hearing from the yes and no sides, from Noel Pearson and Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price respectively.

The interviews were conducted by Dwayne Jeffries, on behalf of Better Balanced Futures, representing the combined faith communities of Australia.

The interviews include issues requested to be raised by leaders of the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and Christian communities.
