Description

Today I saw a picture of a belt. This brings to mind the first piece of spiritual armour Apostle Paul advises us to put on when he was addressing the church in Ephesus. His listeners/readers would have associated the belt with the armour of the Roman soldiers. The belt had both practical and symbolic significance. In a practical sense it supported the soldier's sword and breastplate. A dagger and coin purse could also be hung from it. In a symbolic sense it was only worn by the Roman soldiers and high ranking civil servants, even when the soldiers were off duty. Its decoration would indicate the military status of the wearer. We can thus reflect on the spiritual importance of the Belt of Truth which Apostle Paul indicated as being the first piece of spiritual armour to wear. (Ephesians 6:14). Jesus told us, as recorded in John 8:32, "you will know the truth and the truth will set you free". Free from what? The truth tells us that Jesus has saved us from our sin and death and, with Him, we can go on into eternity. When we apply this truth our thinking, attitudes and actions will be accompanied by such a wonderful sense of freedom.
