We may have a good overview of a person or situation but we don't know absolutely everything. As with a tree in the distance, we might be able to see the age and type of tree, but we invariably cannot see all the detail. In the Old Testament 2 Kings 6 the prophet Elisha is told by God the secret invasion plans of King Aram into Israel. That way Israel were prepared and able to ward off attacks. When King Aram surrounded the city of Dothan where Elisha was residing, God sent an even bigger angelic army which Elisha could see with his spiritually open eyes. In the Old Testament times the Holy Spirit only came down and advised specific people such as kings, priests and prophets. When Jesus left this earth He made His Holy Spirit available to all who call upon Him. When we do, like Elisha, we will be privy to some of God's knowledge and we will have our spiritual eyes open.
