Today I saw barbed wire which further propelled me into thinking of the crown of long thorns which was forced into Jesus's head in mock worship, by the Roman soldiers, after His viscious flogging and before the crucifixion. In Genesis 3, thorns are first mentioned in the bible, as one of the consequences to Adam and Eve sinning in the Garden of Eden. "To Adam He said, 'Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, 'you must not eat from it', cursed is the ground because of you. Through painful toil you will eat food from it, all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles ...By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food ...."(verses 17-19). The crown of thorns on Jesus's brow reversed the curse. Jesus had already told His disciples that He came to bring them abundant life (John 10:10) and to give rest to those who labour (Matthew 11:28). We now have blessings not curses, through Jesus Christ.
