Description

Today someone sent me a beautiful description of the splendid giant Californian redwood trees (sequioas) which can reach majestic heights of 116m/380 ft and yet have roots of a relatively short depth of about 3.7m, 12 ft at most. How come? Because their roots intertwine and support each other horizontally. I reflect that this can be like us in that we are ultimately and individually responsible for our own attitudes and actions in our lives (see 1 Corinthians 9:24) but we all need a support system. We sometimes help others and sometimes we need their help. We are the family of Christ, the Body of Christ. This is why Apostle Paul reminds us that "If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it" (1 Corinthians 12:26-27).
