Episode 15 - Sylver
In Episode 15 of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, special guest Sylver Acrey talked us through how her shuffle journey began when she witnessed a fellow go-go dancer shuffling on stage, instantly igniting her curiosity. Coming from a background in hip-hop and other dance forms, she was particularly drawn to the intricate footwork that cutting shapes had to offer.
To deepen her understanding and skills, Sylver developed a student-instructor relationship with members of the Mile High Shufflers. Through their guidance, she gradually absorbed various styles from each member, loving the opportunity to explore and incorporate diverse techniques into her own repertoire. This exposure to different styles not only enriched her dance vocabulary, but also fueled her passion for shuffling.
Beyond the physical aspects, Sylver also discovered that shuffling held therapeutic value for her. Struggling with depression and anxiety, she found solace and inspiration in the dance form. Shuffling became a powerful outlet for her emotions, allowing her to break free from the grip of negative thoughts and redirect her focus toward the benefits of movement.
During the episode, the conversation shifted to the dynamics of meetups within the shuffling community. Sylver discussed the significance of these gatherings. She highlighted how meetups serve as confidence boosters, helping shufflers reduce performance anxiety and desensitize themselves to judgment. Moreover, she emphasize the joy of breaking the circle at meetups, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone can participate and contribute to the collective experience.
Sylver's personal journey in shuffling reached a major milestone at the Sonic Bloom festival. Attending the festival alone, she embarked on a transformative soul-searching adventure that deepened her love for shuffling. Amidst the Desert Hearts sunrise set, Sylver discovered a profound connection to the dance. This experience not only enhanced her shuffling skills but also left her feeling renewed and invigorated as she returned from the festival with a strengthened bond to her passion.
