Episode 19 - Shambo
In this episode of The Shuffle Curious Podcast we welcome a special guest, Shambo!
An artist at heart, Shambo's love for music, especially rap and hip-hop, has always been a driving force in his life. But it wasn't until he started hanging out at The Red Lion, a bar in his college town, that he unleashed his inner child and discovered a newfound freedom in dancing without a care.
Shambo's dance journey began when he arrived in Denver. It was at this point that he knew he wanted to better himself in shuffling and dance in general. Embracing new experiences, such as dancing alone during adventures into the mountains and other Colorado landmarks, and hanging at Cheeseman Park all contributed to his growth as a dancer.
He eventually made his way to his first meetup with the Mile High Shufflers in Denver. The warm embrace of the dance community instantly drew him in. During this time he had a sparking desire to fully embrace the title of "dancer" - a label he initially struggled to claim. Gradually, he integrated himself into the vibrant Denver dance, shuffle, and music scene, forming meaningful connections with fellow dance enthusiasts and other like-minded people.
Drawing on his sports background, Shambo cleverly incorporated skills learned from playing sports into his shuffling, using them as a stepping stone to level up his flow. Overcoming his discomfort and insecurities, Shambo gradually transformed into a confident dancer. One of his breakthrough moments was at Coachella, where he unlocked his flow and took the bold step of recording himself to share his progress with the world - a significant mental block he conquered. Now, he incorporates Memphis jookin’ and other dance styles into his shuffling.
He is now very nested in the communities that embarrassed him. Shambo's involvement with VYBE (Vibrate Your Best Energy) played a crucial role in fostering the dance community through park-and-play events and other initiatives (check out their IG below!). The encouragement he received from this supportive community enabled him to confidently identify as a dancer, a title he proudly claims today.
Bio:
Shambo is a dancing, DJing, photo-taking and event-curating entrepreneur, Co-Founder of Vibrate Your Best Energy (VYBE) based in Denver, CO.
Growing up an excellent student-athlete, he didn’t start dancing until college after finding himself in spaces that encouraged his natural expression of movement, primarily rooted in footwork skills from basketball.
Although mainly drawn to the rhythm & culture of hip hop, Shambo’s discovery of EDM led him to shuffling, which has helped carry him to profound discoveries of freedom, human connection, spirituality and self-love.
