Episode 8 - Jesse
In this episode of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, we had a very special out-of-state guest, Jesse Fishman! It was an absolute pleasure speaking to Jesse, as he’s been a friend and mentor to me ever since we met through an online shuffle challenge. Shuffle Crack Heads Unite!
Jesse talks about his interests and hobbies in skateboarding and bodybuilding, which he believes primed him for his shuffle journey. Jesse shares his first rave experiences and how he was captivated by the shufflers he saw on the dance floor, which he thought were wizards. He became determined to learn and has since dedicated himself to the dance. He also talks about his induction into Nameless Shufflers, a community of shufflers in NYC, and how pivotal they were in his development.
Throughout his journey, Jesse struggled with getting out of his head and more into his body while dancing and developing musicality. However, he found shuffling to be an avenue of freedom and a form of expression, especially when he was in PA school. He shares how much confidence he has built throughout his dance journey, and how he wants others to experience this boost in confidence. Therefore, he supports other shufflers, encourages them often, and tries to build community around the dance.
We also talk relationships, lessons learned from mentors, getting over and mitigating performance anxiety, and dancing for one’s own self. Towards the end of the episode, he gives tips, tricks, and tactics about battling and battle mindsets around shuffling. Stay for the end as we discuss Jesse's passion for glides and how he learned and integrates Memphis Jooking into his shuffling. Bio:
Jesse Fishman is a dancer, Physicians Assistant (PA), fitness enthusiast, and occasional video game addict. Born and raised in Staten Island, NY, he’s one of the leaders of Nameless Shufflers, cultivating community, growth, and connection within the NYC shuffle scene. When he is not being a wizard on the dance floor, he is working as a Neurosurgical PA, getting yoked in the gym, or “cracking out” over super smash bros.
