Zach Rhoads speaks with Travis Lupick, a journalist and coordinating editor of Vancouver B.C.'s The Georgia Straight.
Lupick tells the moving story of a grassroots group of citizens living in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside in the 1990's and 2000's. These citizens-- all active drug users-- engaged in a political fight, in response to a growing number of drug-related deaths, demanding they be afforded the same rights to health as all other citizens.
Travis Lupick's book, Fighting For Space, recounts the roller-coaster-like series of events that took place as these-- once-isolated-- members of the community made an unprecedented social and political transformation in their favor.
Best of all, Travis Lupick offers insight about what we, in the United States can learn from the story, namely: how to save lives.
