'Gadariya' (1955) is a multi-themed masterpiece about the inclusive
Tehzeeb of undivided Punjab, of complete devotion to curiosity, to
learning and to the teacher, and the pain of Partition. Its young, and
teenaged narrator brings out the innocence and simplicity of DauJi, the
protagonist. DauJi is the ideal teacher who lit himself from the light
of his own murshid to pass on the thirst of learning. 'Gadariya' is
that kind of short story which can immortalize its creator.
Ashfaq Ahmad (1925 Muktsar-2004 Lahore) was a writer, broadcaster and playwright.
