The short story ‘Melanin’ explores the nuances of fair
complexion preference in the Indian society. The evil especially targets young women and this short story uncovers the complexes and thoughts that flow
in the mind of a young women who is a brilliant artist but seems to have been caught in the vortex of being dark-skinned. The story is a tale of her victory over all odds.
This short story, ‘Melanin’, published in 2023, was named
‘Best Story’ by the Urmila Anand Simriti Book Award.
Jaswinder Dharmkot is a teacher by profession and a fiction
writer by passion. His stories often feature little glimpses of his professional life as well. This short story collection “Melanin” has recently won the Punjab Languages Department’s Principal Sujan Singh Award (Story).
