How to study the Bible like it matters! (A Modified Inductive Study Method)
1. Read the passage. (#1)
2. List any questions you have about the passage on the first read through. (you will
come back to these in a later step.)
3. Reread the passage. (#2)
4. List any repeated words/phrases, or words/phrases that stuck out to you.
5. Rewrite/paraphrase the passage in your own words, break down into singular verse,
numerous verses or paragraphs if necessary.
6. Summarize the passage in one to two sentences. Utilize outline and structuring
methods if needed.
7. Consult a commentary or references to see what another theologian may have
thought about the passage.
8. Take time to write out who is involved? Where does this take place? When does this
take place? How does it relate to the overall story arc around it?
9. Revisit the questions you had in step 2, utilize different search methods if necessary
to find and resolve the questions you had.
10. List any verses/passages that come to mind when you really meditate on the
passage at hand.
11. How can you personally apply the passage to your life?
