Intro/Outro Song - Reckless Love by Cory Asbury
Introduction:
Welcome to Christ Talk Canada, where we discuss the Word of God and its relevance to our lives today. In this episode, we will be diving into Hebrews chapter 11, also known as the Hall of Faith. Hebrews 11 is one of the most inspiring and encouraging chapters in the Bible, as it showcases the faith of many men and women throughout history. As we study this chapter together, may it strengthen our own faith and inspire us to live for Christ.
The Definition of Faith (Hebrews 11:1-3)
Hebrews 11 begins with a powerful definition of faith: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen" (Hebrews 11:1, NKJV). Faith is not simply a wishful thinking or blind belief, but it is a confident assurance that what we hope for will indeed come to pass. This assurance is based on our trust in God's character and His promises to us.
Verse 2 goes on to say, "For by it the elders obtained a good testimony" (Hebrews 11:2, NKJV). The elders referred to here are the Old Testament heroes of the faith, such as Abraham, Moses, and David. These individuals obtained a good testimony because of their faith in God. They trusted Him even when the circumstances around them seemed impossible, and their faith was credited to them as righteousness.
Verse 3 reminds us that it was by faith that we understand that the world was created by the word of God. We were not there to witness it, but we trust in God's word that it is true. Our faith in God's word is the foundation of our Christian faith, and it is through faith that we are saved.
Examples of Faith in Action (Hebrews 11:4-40)
After defining faith in the first three verses, Hebrews 11
goes on to give numerous examples of individuals who demonstrated their faith
in action. Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice than Cain because of his
faith (Hebrews 11:4), Enoch was taken up by God because of his faith (Hebrews 11:5-6),
and Noah built the ark by faith (Hebrews 11:7).
Abraham is highlighted as a key example of faith throughout Hebrews 11. He left his home and country to go to a land that God promised to him, even though he did not know where he was going (Hebrews 11:8). He believed God's promise that he would have a son, even though he and Sarah were well beyond childbearing years (Hebrews 11:11-12). He was even willing to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice, trusting that God would provide a way out (Hebrews 11:17-19). Other examples of faith in action include the Israelites crossing the Red Sea (Hebrews 11:29), Rahab's protection of the Israelite spies (Hebrews 11:31), and the willingness of many to suffer persecution and death for their faith (Hebrews 11:32-38).
The Importance of Faith (Hebrews 11:6, 12:1-2)
Hebrews 11:6 states, "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (NKJV). This verse emphasizes the critical importance of faith in our relationship with God. We cannot please God without faith, and we must believe that He exists and rewards those who seek Him.
Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages us to run the race of faith with endurance, looking to Jesus as our ultimate example. It reminds us to lay aside anything that hinders us and to focus on Jesus, who endured the cross and is now seated at the right hand of God. Our faith in Jesus as our savior is what gives us the strength to endure and finish the race.
