In Today's episode, my guest is CJ Spotswood. Nursing has been in CJ's family for 3 generations following the male lineage. However, his path has not been very traditional. He got his LPN in high school followed by getting his RN after obtaining a bachelor's degree. He then went on to get his Bachelors in Nursing from the University of Maine at Augusta, followed by a Masters in Psychiatric-Mental Health from Southern Maine University. It was during this time that CJ got interested in the lore of Steven Pollack and started to track down the original studies from the Spring Grove experiments that led him to state that psilocybin would be accepted as a mainstream medicine in under 10 years. He was then chosen to present at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association on the research he was doing. After this, along with a psychedelic journey, he was able to confirm his path and has since become a leader in the field. Most recently he has published his book, The Microdosing Guidebook, which aims to help people explore these medicines in earnest and has been certified through the California Institute of Integral Studies Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research.
In this episode we talk about the benefits that psychedelics can have on society, through both a medical and traditional model. We discuss where we are currently at in terms of access and some of the current legislation being explored through multiple states while acknowledging the challenges that healthcare professionals deal with. CJ helps to deepen my understanding of how nurses are uniquely qualified to be a major component of anyone's psychedelic care team.
We talk about the benefits that CJ has seen since incorporating these modalities into his practice and the hope that he has for the future.
