Today’s episode is with Dr. Bryon Adinoff. Bryon is an addiction psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and advocate. He has had a lifelong career in academia while also serving as a psychiatrist within the VA for 30 years. He has published over 200 papers in the addiction speciality and is the Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. Now in semi-retirement, Dr. Adinoff has shifted his focus from studying substance use itself to examining the impact of drug prohibition. His dedication to Doctors for Drug Policy Reform's mission, where he serves as president, reflects his desire to replace the harmful effects of the global drug war with a system that is rooted in science, compassion, and justice, ensuring the well-being of both individuals and society
During the episode we talk about the current state of drug policy reform. Dr. Adinoff tells me how despite medical cannabis being legal for almost 3 decades, doctors are still not taught about the most populous receptor system in the human body, the endocannabinoid system. We talk about the impending rescheduling and limits that FDA faces in regulating such a substance. Throughout the episode we explore substance use and Dr. Adinoff emphasizes how imprisoning people for drug offenses hasn’t solved the problem, and draws a fascinating parallel to heart disease. He notes how society doesn’t imprison people for eating unhealthy foods, despite the profound societal and family impacts. Finally, We discuss what the future could look like if we can implement certain measures in society.
This was an incredibly informative conversation. Dr. Adinoff’s insights into drug policy reform, cannabis regulation, and the future of the industry were profound. If you’re interested in where this is all heading and what needs to change, this is an episode you won’t want to miss! Check it out!
