Episode Description
In this episode of The Daryl Perry Podcast, I’m unpacking a phrase that gets tossed around a lot when it comes to relationships — “You have to love yourself before you can love someone else.” I think the intent behind it is heading in the right direction, but I don’t fully agree. Instead, I believe it’s about being in process. Accepting yourself. Appreciating who you are at every stage — past, present, and future.
Many people struggle with their past, especially when they’ve changed or are trying to move forward. But learning to acknowledge that past and make peace with it is a huge step toward self-love. That doesn’t mean you have to have everything figured out before forming meaningful relationships. Often, the relationships we build actually help us learn to love ourselves more deeply. But if you’ve found yourself stuck in repeated patterns — whether it’s in friendships or romantic connections — it might be time to do some inner work and ask: what do I truly want from my relationships? And just as important, what am I willing to give?
We’re told to live life from the inside out, and that’s not just a catchy phrase. That means doing the work internally and bringing that clarity into the way we connect with others. It’s about understanding your own blueprint so you can see how to show up for yourself and for others — and how to recognize when others are truly showing up for you.
So if you’re working on self-acceptance or feel like you’ve been repeating old relationship patterns, this episode offers some thoughts to sit with. As always, I encourage you to share this with someone who may need to hear it. And if you’ve been listening for a while and haven’t subscribed yet, go ahead and do that now. Thanks so much for being here.
