Description

Welcome to a very special episode! Here, you'll learn all about learning with language invention. How can we use a cultural love of words, language, and fandom to help our students enjoy learning to read and reading to learn?

Our special guest is Dr. Andrew Higgins, a Tolkien Scholar who received his Ph.D. through Cardiff Metropolitan University on 'The Genesis of Tolkien's Mythology' and co-edited with Professor Dimitra Fimi "A Secret Vice: Tolkien on Language Invention," written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published by HarperCollins. He has also published on invented languages in the Star Trek and Star Wars story worlds and his research focuses on Tolkien and other invented languages and world-building. Most recently, his essays on Star Wars and Star Trek languages were published in the series coedited by Dr Amy Sturgis and Emily Strand, titled
From “Utinni!” to “Aliit Ori’shya Tal’din”: The Glossopoeiac Journey of Star Wars
and
“Dif-Tor heh Smusma,” “Jolan tru,” “NuqNeh”: Exploring the Glossopoesis of the Star Trek Universe.
Andy is Director of Development at Imperial War Museums.
