Summary
Talise and Leah, the host of Building a Mumpire podcast, welcomed each other and began their conversation. Leah encourages Talise to define herself in a way that does not include the words mum or business owner. Talise reveals that she is thirty-two, busy, passionate, kind, and hardworking. Leah reflects on how difficult it is for many to not begin their self-description with mum or business owner as it has become so ingrained in our culture. The two then move on to have a conversation about motherhood and business.
Talise works for herself after a position she held in a charity became redundant. She has ADHD, and believes it to be a superpower as it allows her to think differently and come up with creative solutions to challenges. She decided to take the leap and start her own business as she felt the spark had gone from her previous job. She is loving life and engaging in her work, and has found it interesting to work with women who also have ADHD. Talise believes that having ADHD allows people to think outside the box and encourages them to challenge the status quo.
The conversation is between two female entrepreneurs who discuss their journey to starting their own business. Talise had been in a corporate job that made her unhappy and wasn't fulfilling her needs, so she decided to take the risk and start her own business. Leah commended her for such an empowering decision and agreed that starting something of your own is both scary and empowering. They discussed the benefits of being a business owner, such as having the freedom and flexibility to make your own decisions and having control over your own success. They also acknowledged that despite being business owners, they don't always have their shit together and joked about pretending not to look in the other room when it's a mess.
They discussed the challenges of running a business and being a mother. Talise shared that the biggest challenge she faced was the mum guilt she felt from having to prioritise work over her children. She was very lucky to have her fiancee as a support system for her children as she worked. Talise noted that she had to reframe the mum guilt she felt in the corporate world and be mindful of when she was able to take time for her children. She stressed the importance of understanding that her work still needed to get done and that her children's needs had to take priority when it mattered most.
