Description

On Sunday afternoon, 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno entered Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, armed with an automatic long rifle and accompanied by her seven-year-old son, opening fire during the Spanish service and injuring two civilians before being killed by off-duty officers providing security, likely preventing further casualties in the megachurch that can accommodate up to 16,000 people. The injured included a 57-year-old man with a hip injury and the shooter's son, critically wounded with a gunshot to the head. Police discovered Moreno had a history of mental illness and prior arrests, along with anti-semitic writings linked to a conflict with her ex-husband, although she acted alone. Investigators found no explosives as claimed by Moreno, who resided in Conroe, Texas, roughly 40 miles north of Houston. The exact motive behind the shooting remains unknown. Lakewood Church, led by Pastor Joel Osteen, is renowned for its uplifting Christian televangelism and attracts about 45,000 attendees weekly. Osteen expressed gratitude that the incident occurred when fewer members were present. Texas Governor Greg Abbott pledged full support to the investigation.
