John 6:22-40

Surveying the setting.

1. The day before. (6:1-20)
2. This day. (22-26)

Surveying the flow of events.

1. Jesus exposes inadequate motives and points to the correct motive for those who seek Him. (26-27)
2. Jesus clarifies the way to be true followers. (28-29)
3. The people ask for more signs. (30-31)
4. Jesus declares that He is the Bread of Life. (32-35)
5. The people did not believe. (36)
6. Jesus proclaims that He came from heaven to give Himself, the Bread of God, the Bread of life, to those who come to Him. (37-40)

Surveying three vital truths.

1. Life with God is His gift - not earned. (27-29, 33, 35-36; see also John 3:16, 4:10; Romans 3:20; 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Timothy 1:9)
2. Life with God is in Jesus by personal faith in Him - not in anyone or anything else. (29, 32-33, 35-37; 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 10:13)
3. Life with God is eternal life - not hypothetically eternal, not temporary, not probationary or conditional. (27, 37-40; see also 3:16; 4:13-14; 5:24; 10:10, 25-30; 11:25-26; Romans 8:28-39)
