At 11 PM on July 13, 1966, nine student nurses were in their dormitory at 2319 E. 100th St. in the Jeffery Manor neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois when someone broke into the townhome. Corazon Amurao had only been asleep for about 30 minutes when she heard a knock on her bedroom door. Not frantic or aggressive, just a fairly normal knock from someone who had taken the screen out of a dormitory window downstairs and snuck into her home. When she opened the door, the man on the other side held a gun and a knife, and told her that he just needed help. He forced all of the women to sit on the floor, and told them that he just needed money to get to New Orleans. They offered him everything they had, which ended up being about $35. What unfolded next was something that these young women likely could never have imagined, even in their worst nightmares
