On October 22, 1989, in St. Joseph, Minnesota, three young boys - Jacob, Aaron, and Trevor - headed on two bikes and a scooter to the local Tom Thumb store to rent some DVDs for their movie night. They put on bright clothing and brought their flashlights, knowing that it was dark out. After gathering their movies, they turned back toward home shortly after 9:00, where they were met by a man with a facemask on, carrying a gun. He told the three boys to turn off their flashlights and lie face down. He asked each of them, one at a time, their ages. Trevor, Jacob’s little brother, told the man he was 10, and the man told him to run away into the woods and don’t look back. Aaron and Jacob, both reported that they were 11 years old - then the man gave Aaron the same instructions as were given to Trevor. When they had finally run far enough that it felt safe to look back, Trevor and Aaron couldn’t see anything - the man, Jacob, and any evidence of the two were gone. This case became the crime of the century in Minnesota.
