As a journalist, corporate writer and author, Max Friedman has spent his working life discovering and writing hundreds of stories about other people. With Painful Joy: A Holocaust Family Memoir, he turned his writing to a subject he had avoided for most of his life — his own family history. He was born in Sweden to Polish/Jewish Holocaust survivors who met and married after their liberation from Bergen-Belsen. The family emigrated here in 1952 seeking a new beginning. Yet surviving would define their lives ever since.
