Interested in learning more about passing? Check out my recommendations:
Each novel and short story recommended is very dear to me, and is essential to understanding the precarious nature of white passing in America. I specifically think Coogler referenced Passing by Nella Larsen and Imitation of Life.
- Passing by Nella Larsen - the pinnacle of passing literature, it tells the tale of two childhood friends, who reconnect as adults. One is white passing, one lives as Black. It's the best for a reason.
- Imitation of Life by Fannie Hurst - A white passing daughter and the painful, fraught rejection of her Black mother. Check out the movie!
- The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett - identical twins in born in an all-Black (extremely light-skinned town) take two different paths.
- Desiree's Baby by Kate Chopin - Slave owners grapple with the truth of their beloved baby.
