There have been so many conversations about representation over the last few years, but sometimes we miss talking about the significance of representation in children’s books. Some key takeaways from this episode include:
Both of us felt called to write racially and culturally diverse children’s books after we struggled to find them for our own kids. We not only wanted more stories with characters that looked like our children, we wanted to share stories that represented multiple races and cultures.
There is cultural significance to empowering our children with reading skills and encouraging them to love the experience of reading. Instead of using reading as a punishment, make it a fun experience for your kids.
Our children are observing and making their own inferences about themselves and people who look like them whether you are talking to them about it or not. Showing them positive stories with diverse representation can help them make positive inferences about themselves and the world around them.
