 HEAR Journaling Genesis 18

Highlight – Genesis 18:10-15 New Living Translation

10 Then one of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!” Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent. 11 Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children. 12 So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?” 13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” 15 Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh.” But the Lord said, “No, you did laugh.”

Explain – The three “men” (reference v 2) were apparently angels, or at least men of God bringing a divine message to Abraham and Sarah that Sarah will have a child in one year.  Abraham was 99 years old and Sarah was 89.  Sarah overheard the conversation between Abraham and the men and she laughed at the message.  The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh?”  Sarah denied that she had laughed, but God knew that she had.

Apply – God is ever faithful.  He will always fulfil His promises.  Perhaps not on the timetable that we may want or ever the way we might expect.  Sarah had evidently lost hope that she could possibly have a child in her late 80s, but God was going to show her as well as the rest of us that God can indeed do anything.  This is a great lesson for us to be faithful and obedient, to strive to abide in and with the Lord consistently and continuously.  We must patiently wait of the Lord and follow His will with faith that He does keep His promises.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.

Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Hebrews 10:23 ESV Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Deuteronomy 7:9 ESV Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,

Respond- Thank You Lord for Your faithfulness.  I trust and honor You Lord.  I strive to abide in You as You abide in me, following obediently and faithfully.  I pray for those that do not know You as savior.  Show them, Lord, in a way that they cannot deny.  Amen.
