Highlight Genesis 22:8-12 New Living Translation
Abraham’s Faith Tested
8 “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together. 9 When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. 10 And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. 11 At that moment the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!” 12 “Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.”
Explain – Abraham’s faith was tested with the instruction to take his son, Isaac, to kill him as a sacrifice. Abraham followed the Lord’s instruction fully right to the point of plunging the knife when the instruction suddenly changed. God didn’t really want the sacrifice of Isaac, but He wanted the full faith of Abraham and Isaac.
Apply – God wants our full faith and obedience as well. We may find ourselves in the midst of a test where we must fully listen, trust, and obey the Lord fully. We must mind His instruction as the instructions may take a sudden change. If we are careful we will not miss the change and experience His best for us.
James 1:3 ESV For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
Hebrews 11:1 ESV Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
James 1:2-4 ESV Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1:12 ESV Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Galatians 2:20 ESV I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Respond – Lord, I know You God want my full faith and obedience. I seek to abide in You as You abide in me ready for any test or trial that may come. Help me Lord to fully listen, trust, and obey You fully. I pray for those that do not yest know You Lord, may they come to a saving knowledge of You. Amen.
