HEAR Journaling - Genesis 23
Highlight – Genesis 23:1-2, 17-20 New Living Translation
The Burial of Sarah
23 When Sarah was 127 years old, 2 she died at Kiriath-arba (now called Hebron) in the land of Canaan. There Abraham mourned and wept for her.
… 17 So Abraham bought the plot of land belonging to Ephron at Machpelah, near Mamre. This included the field itself, the cave that was in it, and all the surrounding trees. 18 It was transferred to Abraham as his permanent possession in the presence of the Hittite elders at the city gate. 19 Then Abraham buried his wife, Sarah, there in Canaan, in the cave of Machpelah, near Mamre (also called Hebron). 20 So the field and the cave were transferred from the Hittites to Abraham for use as a permanent burial place.
Explain - Sarah died at 127 years old, Abraham was 10 years older so he was 137 years old when Sarah died. Isaac would have been 37 when Sarah died as she was 90 when she gave birth. Abraham purchased the land in Canaan as a burial site for his family where many would eventually be interred.
Apply – Sara thought she was old when she was 90, she didn’t think that she could do anything worthwhile for the Lord at 90. But look at her legacy, she lived to be 127 years old and her family line would eventually lead to Jesus, the Messiah, our Lord, and Savior. We too must not judge ourselves to be worthy, but seek God every moment of every day. He has great and important things for us to do. He will decide the appointed time that we are to go home to be with Him, in the meantime we must be ever faithful in our walk in and with Him.
Matthew 24:13 ESV But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Matthew 10:22 ESV And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
James 1:12 ESV Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Mark 13:13 ESV And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Hebrews 3:14 ESV For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
James 5:11 ESV Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
Revelation 2:26 ESV The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations,
Revelation 3:11 ESV I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.
Respond – Lord, help me not to be discouraged, not to judge myself to be worthy, but to seek You every moment of every day. I know You have great and important things for me to do. I know that You will decide the appointed time that I am to come home to be with You, in the meantime I will strive to be ever faithful in my walk in and with You. I pray for those that do not know You. Amen.
