Highlight – Genesis 24:1-4, 61, 67 New Living Translation

A Wife for Isaac

1Abraham was now a very old man, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. One day Abraham said to his oldest servant, the man in charge of his household, “Take an oath by putting your hand under my thigh. Swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not allow my son to marry one of these local Canaanite women.Go instead to my homeland, to my relatives, and find a wife there for my son Isaac.”

61 Then Rebekah and her servant girls mounted the camels and followed the man. So Abraham’s servant took Rebekah and went on his way.

67 And Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent, and she became his wife. He loved her deeply, and she was a special comfort to him after the death of his mother.

Explain -   Isaac would have been 37 when Sarah died as she was 90 when she gave birth.  Abraham had his servant return to Canaan to find a bride for Isaac.  The servant was successful and returned with Rebekah to become the wife of Isaac and the mother with heritage that would produce Jesus, the Messiah, our Lord, and Savior.

Apply – Abraham thought he was a very old man.  Abraham was 137 years old at this time.  He sent a servant to accomplish the task of finding a bride for Isaac because he thought that he was not physically able himself.  The servant was successful, Rebekah and Isaac were married.  We must learn to trust the Lord.  His ways are far better than our ways. He has a plan for us just as He did for Isaac and Rebekah.  We must seek Him to ensure we are living in accordance with His plan.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Romans 8:28 ESV And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

John 15:5 ESV I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

John 8:12 ESV Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Deuteronomy 29:29 ESV “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Respond – Lord, help me to trust and obey You in all my ways.  Thank You for the plan You have for my life.  Please make the way plain and help me stay on track to fulfill my purpose in You.  I pray for those that do not know You, Lord, help them find You.  Amen.
