The Death of Abraham

25 Abraham married another wife, whose name was Keturah. She gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s descendants were the Asshurites, Letushites, and Leummites. Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. These were all descendants of Abraham through Keturah. Abraham gave everything he owned to his son Isaac. But before he died, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them off to a land in the east, away from Isaac.

Abraham lived for 175 years, and he died at a ripe old age, having lived a long and satisfying life. He breathed his last and joined his ancestors in death. His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite. 10 This was the field Abraham had purchased from the Hittites and where he had buried his wife Sarah.

Explain - Abraham thought he was old back in Chapter 24, remember he was 137 years old when Sarah died.  He thought that he was too old to travel to find a wife for Isaac, but look here in chapter 25, Abraham married Keturah and they have six children together.  Abraham lives to be 175 years old having lived a long and satisfying life.

Apply - The lesson for us is to not call ourselves out of God’s plan too early.  God has a plan, a most miraculous and wonderful plan.  We must abide in Him as He abides in us.  We must follow Him every moment of every day faithfully and obediently until the end.  Remember, Abraham had to wait until he was 100 years old to receive God’s promise of a son that would be the father of thousands, leading to the birth of Jesus, the Messiah, our Lord, and Savior.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Proverbs 16:9 ESV The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Proverbs 19:21 ESV Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

Jeremiah 1:5 ESV “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Ephesians 2:10 ESV For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Respond – Lord, I know you have a plan for me, a most miraculous and wonderful plan.  I strive to abide in You as You abide in me.  I strive to follow You every moment of every day faithfully and obediently until the end.  I pray for those that do not know You, Lord, may they accomplish the plan that You have for them.  Amen.
