Highlight - Genesis 27:33-36 New Living Translation
Jacob Steals Esau’s Blessing
33 Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably and said, “Then who just served me wild game? I have already eaten it, and I blessed him just before you came. And yes, that blessing must stand!”
34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he let out a loud and bitter cry. “Oh my father, what about me? Bless me, too!” he begged. 35 But Isaac said, “Your brother was here, and he tricked me. He has taken away your blessing.” 36 Esau exclaimed, “No wonder his name is Jacob, for now he has cheated me twice.[a] First he took my rights as the firstborn, and now he has stolen my blessing. Oh, haven’t you saved even one blessing for me?”
Explain – Rebekah conspired with Jacob to steal Esau’s blessing from Isaac. Isaac said that the blessing was given to Esau and even though it was received through deceit the blessing must stand.
Apply - The life lesson seems to indicate that life is not fair, and that is true, life has not been fair since the fall of Adam and Eve. It might appear that the guilty party is getting away with something, but that is not true. God knows all and sees all. We live in a fallen world often seemingly absent of justice. Thankfully we do not receive justice, but mercy and grace from our Lord Jesus Christ as we are all sinners and deserve to die, but He gives us life.
Micah 6:8 ESV He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Isaiah 30:18 ESV Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.
Romans 12:19 ESV Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
Ecclesiastes 3:17 ESV I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time for every matter and for every work.
Proverbs 28:5 ESV Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it completely.
Psalm 37:27-29 ESV Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever. For the Lord loves justice; he will not forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell upon it forever.
Galatians 6:7 ESV Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Respond – Lord, I know that life is nor fair in this fallen world. I know that You know all and see all. I am so thankful that You provide mercy and grace for us sinners. I pray for those that do not know You, Lord, may they find Your mercy and grace. Amen.
