Highlight - Genesis 29:31-35 New Living Translation

Jacob’s Many Children

31 When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he enabled her to have children, but Rachel could not conceive. 32 So Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben,[b] for she said, “The Lord has noticed my misery, and now my husband will love me.”

33 She soon became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Simeon,[c] for she said, “The Lord heard that I was unloved and has given me another son.”

34 Then she became pregnant a third time and gave birth to another son. He was named Levi,[d] for she said, “Surely this time my husband will feel affection for me, since I have given him three sons!” 35 Once again Leah became pregnant and gave birth to another son. She named him Judah,[e] for she said, “Now I will praise the Lord!” And then she stopped having children.

Explain – The Lord blessed Leah, he enabled her to bear children for Joseph.  She bore four sons, 1) Ruban, Joseph’s first born son, 2) Simeon 3) Levi, whose lineage would be the temple priests 4) Ruben, whose lineage would include Jesus, the Messiah.  Rachel had no children although she was loved by Jacob.  God loved and blessed Leah.

Apply – We often ask God why something turned out the way it did, so contrary to our way of thinking.  We are so foolish, God’s ways are far superior to our ways.  Instead of asking why, we need to ask Him to help us accept His will and think, say, and do the things that He would direct us rather than focusing on ourselves.

Philippians 2:4 ESV Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

2 Timothy 3:2-4 ESV For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

1 Corinthians 10:24 ESV Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.

Philippians 2:3-4 ESV Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

James 3:16 ESV For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

Romans 15:1-3 ESV We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.”

Respond -  Lord help me accept Your way, help me to bring my thoughts, words, and deeds in line with Your will.  I pray for those that do not know You, Lord.  Amen.
