HEAR Journaling - Genesis 32
Highlight - Genesis 32:24-32 New Living Translation
Jacob Wrestles with God
24 This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break.25 When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket.26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
27 “What is your name?” the man asked. He replied, “Jacob.”
28 “Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him. “From now on you will be called Israel,[c] because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”
29 “Please tell me your name,” Jacob said. “Why do you want to know my name?” the man replied. Then he blessed Jacob there. 30 Jacob named the place Peniel (which means “face of God”), for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared.” 31 The sun was rising as Jacob left Peniel,[d] and he was limping because of the injury to his hip.32 (Even today the people of Israel don’t eat the tendon near the hip socket because of what happened that night when the man strained the tendon of Jacob’s hip.)
Explain – Genesis chapter 32 includes Jacob’s wrestling with an angel of God. There is a debate among biblical scholars as to whether this was a physical battle or a spiritual one. Whichever it was the ultimate outcome was that Jacob was given the name Israel and his people did receive and continue to receive the blessing of God. We as believers in Jesus Christ are made joint heirs of this very blessing as well.
Apply – There are times where we struggle. We wrestle against temptation, against spiritual and physical attacks, and yes there are times we may struggle with God. The ultimate outcome would be that we have a stronger, more vibrant relationship with the Lord. We must remain steadfast in our faithful and obedient walk with Him.
1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Romans 5:3-5 ESV Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
1 John 4:4 ESV Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
Philippians 4:13 ESV I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
James 1:2-4 ESV
Respond - Lord help me to bring my thoughts, words, and deeds in line with Your will. Help me to prosper in the midst of Your trials. Help me forgive those that would sin against me. I pray for those that do not know You, Lord. Amen.
