HEAR Journaling - Genesis 35
Highlight – Genesis 35:1-5 New Living Translation
Jacob’s Return to Bethel
1Then God said to Jacob, “Get ready and move to Bethel and settle there. Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother, Esau.” 2 So Jacob told everyone in his household, “Get rid of all your pagan idols, purify yourselves, and put on clean clothing. 3 We are now going to Bethel, where I will build an altar to the God who answered my prayers when I was in distress. He has been with me wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave Jacob all their pagan idols and earrings, and he buried them under the great tree near Shechem. 5 As they set out, a terror from God spread over the people in all the towns of that area, so no one attacked Jacob’s family.
Explain – God directed Jacob to return to Bethel, to build an altar. Jacob responded quickly and in accordance with God’s instruction. He collected all the false idols and buried them under a great tree near Shechem, the pace where they committed murderous revenge. His people purified themselves and put on new clothing. They went to Bethel to build an altar to the Lord. The Lord protected them on their journey.
Apply – We too need to return to Bethel. I mean that we need to repent of our sins, remove any and all idols that are coming between us and God, build an altar by picking a place of solitude where we can repent to God and seek Him for His knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and instruction. Then we must follow Him reverently, obediently, beginning every day by crucifying our fleshly will and following His will throughout the day.
Acts 3:19 ESV Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
Matthew 4:17 ESV From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
2 Peter 3:9 ESV The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Acts 2:38 ESV And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Respond – Lord I repent for my transgressions against You. Help me Lord to follow You faithfully and obediently always, forever. Help me Lord to see others as You do, to forgive and love as You would have me to. I pray for anyone that does not know You that they will be drawn to You for salvation and a new life in You, Amen.
