HEAR Journaling - Genesis 36
Highlight – Genesis 36:1,6-9 New Living Translation
Descendants of Esau
1 This is the account of the descendants of Esau (also known as Edom).
…6 Esau took his wives, his children, and his entire household, along with his livestock and cattle—all the wealth he had acquired in the land of Canaan—and moved away from his brother, Jacob. 7 There was not enough land to support them both because of all the livestock and possessions they had acquired. 8 So Esau (also known as Edom) settled in the hill country of Seir. 9 This is the account of Esau’s descendants, the Edomites, who lived in the hill country of Seir.
Explain – Genesis chapter 36 covers the account of the descendants of Esau, also known as Edom, who became the Edomites. His family began in Canaan, then they moved to the land of Seir. The following is taken from Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Genesis Chapter 36:
Observe here,1. That only the names of Esau's sons and grandsons are recorded, only their names, not their history; for it is the church that Moses preserves the records of, not the record of those that are without. Those elders that lived by faith alone obtained a good report. It is Sion that produces men of renown, not Seir, Ps. 87:5.
Apply – The application for us is to realize that our lives can impact the standing of our own descendants. Will they be part of the family of God, or will they perish. We need to realize the impact of our life choices not only upon ourselves, our immediate families, but also on our generations.
Psalm 71:18 ESV So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.
Exodus 34:6-7 ESV The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
Exodus 20:5-6 ESV You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Psalm 78:4 ESV We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.
Luke 1:50 ESV And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
Psalm 100:5 ESV
Acts 16:31 ESV
Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation. I pray for all my generations and all their descendants. I pray for all of their extended families and all their generations for a saving knowledge and for steadfast faith to follow You obediently forever, Amen.
