Highlight – Genesis 37:1-4 New Living Translation

Joseph’s Dreams

1 So Jacob settled again in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived as a foreigner.

2 This is the account of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father’s flocks. He worked for his half brothers, the sons of his father’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing.

3 Jacob[a] loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe.[b] 4 But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.

Explain – Genesis chapter 37 has the beginning of the story of Joseph.  Joseph was loved most by Jacob as he was birthed by Rachel in an old age.  Joseph’s brothers hated him because of Jacob’s favor on him.

Apply – We can learn from Jacob’s error that we should not sew discord within our own families.  The Lord’s instruction is clear, we are to raise up our children in the way they should go through the empowering of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 6:4 ESV Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Ephesians 6:1-5 ESV Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ,

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 ESV Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Deuteronomy 6:7 ESV You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Proverbs 29:15 ESV The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

Proverbs 22:6 ESV Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Exodus 20:12 ESV “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation.  I thank You Lord for my children and grandchildren.  I pray that they will be ever faithful to You and will bring up their descendants with the leading of You, Holy Spirit.  I pray for those that do not know You, may they come to a saving knowledge and new life in You, Amen.
