Highlight – Genesis 38:26-30 New Living Translation
Judah and Tamar
26 Judah recognized them immediately and said, “She is more righteous than I am, because I didn’t arrange for her to marry my son Shelah.” And Judah never slept with Tamar again. 27 When the time came for Tamar to give birth, it was discovered that she was carrying twins. 28 While she was in labor, one of the babies reached out his hand. The midwife grabbed it and tied a scarlet string around the child’s wrist, announcing, “This one came out first.” 29 But then he pulled back his hand, and out came his brother! “What!” the midwife exclaimed. “How did you break out first?” So he was named Perez.[a] 30 Then the baby with the scarlet string on his wrist was born, and he was named Zerah.[b]
Explain – Judah was not honest with Tamar, he failed to arrange a marriage with his son Shelah. Tamar fooled Judah into thinking he was sleeping with a harlot when she was actually his daughter-in-law. Judah admitted his sin and said that Tamar was more righteous than him. The twins that were birthed from this union Perez and Zerah were birthed such that Zerah’s arm came forth first, noted with a scarlet thread, then Perez was completely born first. Perez in an ancestor to Jesus.
Both Tamar and Judah sinned in their immoral union, but God worked through their sinfulness to bring about the birth of Jesus Christ through their bloodline (Ruth 4:18–22; Matthew 1:3; Luke 3:33). The Messiah is called Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5), having descended from Judah through Perez.

Apply – The story of Judah and Tamar birthing Perez reminds us that God has a plan for all people. He is not hindered by our sinful history. The Lord can accomplish everything through us as long as we are faithful and obedient with Him.
Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation and Your plan for me. Help me Lord to be all that I can be in You. I pray for those that do not know You, may they come to a saving knowledge and new life in You, Amen.
