Joseph Interprets Two Dreams
18 “This is what the dream means,” Joseph told him. “The three baskets also represent three days. 19 Three days from now Pharaoh will lift you up and impale your body on a pole. Then birds will come and peck away at your flesh.” 20 Pharaoh’s birthday came three days later, and he prepared a banquet for all his officials and staff. He summoned[a] his chief cup-bearer and chief baker to join the other officials. 21 He then restored the chief cup-bearer to his former position, so he could again hand Pharaoh his cup. 22 But Pharaoh impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had predicted when he interpreted his dream. 23 Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer, however, forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought.
Explain – The story of Joseph continues from chapter 39 with Joseph still in prison, but he is granted the ability to interpret dreams. His interpretations came to pass and would be used to change Joseph’s life that we will see in chapter 41.
Apply – The application for us is to realize that God gives spiritual gifts as He wants. When we are given a spiritual gift, we must seek God and obediently follow His direction in exercising our giftings.
Acts 1:8 ESV But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
1 Corinthians 12:1 ESV Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
1 Corinthians 12:11 ESV All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
1 Corinthians 12:4 ESV Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
1 Timothy 4:14 ESV Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you.
Romans 12:6-8 ESV Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
1 Peter 4:10-11 ESV As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may
Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation and Your plan for me. Help me Lord to be all that I can be in You. Show me the spiritual gifts and provide the wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction to apply them in accordance with Your will. I pray for those that do not know You, may they come to a saving knowledge and new life in You, Amen.
