HEAR Journaling - Genesis 42

Highlight – Genesis 42:23-29  New Living Translation

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt

23 Of course, they didn’t know that Joseph understood them, for he had been speaking to them through an interpreter. 24 Now he turned away from them and began to weep. When he regained his composure, he spoke to them again. Then he chose Simeon from among them and had him tied up right before their eyes.

25 Joseph then ordered his servants to fill the men’s sacks with grain, but he also gave secret instructions to return each brother’s payment at the top of his sack. He also gave them supplies for their journey home. 26 So the brothers loaded their donkeys with the grain and headed for home. 29 When the brothers came to their father, Jacob, in the land of Canaan, they told him everything that had happened to them.

Explain – The story of Joseph continues from chapter 41 with Joseph the 2nd ruler in all of Egypt.  Famine has brought his brothers to Egypt seeking some grain.  Joseph does not yet reveal who he is, but they do believe their sin against their brother has fallen on them.  Joseph sends them to bring back Benjamin and Jacob.

Apply – Joseph’s life is an example to us all to be faithful and obedient to the Lord despite any circumstance, no matter how bad things may appear or how long things are taking from our perspective.  We must live a Spirit controlled life no matter what our position in life may be.

Proverbs 22:4 ESV The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.

Proverbs 11:2 ESV When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.

James 4:10 ESV Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Colossians 3:12 ESV Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,

1 Peter 5:6 ESV Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

Philippians 2:3 ESV Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Respond – Lord, thank You for Your salvation and the awesome life that I share with You.  I seek to remain obedient and faithful in and with You despite any circumstances.  I pray for those that do not know You, may they come to a saving knowledge and new life in You, Amen.
