HEAR Journaling - Genesis 46
Highlight – Genesis 46:1-7 New Living Translation
Jacob’s Journey to Egypt
46 So Jacob[a] set out for Egypt with all his possessions. And when he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac. 2 During the night God spoke to him in a vision. “Jacob! Jacob!” he called.
“Here I am,” Jacob replied.
3 “I am God,[b] the God of your father,” the voice said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make your family into a great nation. 4 I will go with you down to Egypt, and I will bring you back again. You will die in Egypt, but Joseph will be with you to close your eyes.”
5 So Jacob left Beersheba, and his sons took him to Egypt. They carried him and their little ones and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had provided for them. 6 They also took all their livestock and all the personal belongings they had acquired in the land of Canaan. So Jacob and his entire family went to Egypt— 7 sons and grandsons, daughters and granddaughters—all his descendants.
Explain – God came to Jacob in a dream to comfort him in traveling to Egypt. Jacob responded by doing precisely what God commanded, Joseph moved his entire family totally and completely to Egypt. God explained that He had a marvelous plan for all of Jacob’s descendants. God had changed Jacob’s name to Israel in Chapter 32:27-28, but here God called him Jacob.
Apply - God can speak directly to us in many ways. He will communicate with us in a way that we can best receive the message that He provides. If we will seek Him often, we can maintain this wonderful relationship with Him, so when He has an important message for us, we will be available to receive it and do what He would have us do. We do not want to miss God’s message because we were distracted.

Respond - Lord, thank You for this exciting life that I share with You and in You. Help me guard my heart from anything that will come between us, Lord. Help me to hear You clearly and to act obediently at the right time according to Your will. I strive to seek You and abide in You as You abide in me. I pray for anyone that does not yet know You as Lord. Savior and Friend. Amen.
