HEAR Journaling - Genesis 9

Highlight - Genesis 9:12-17 New Living Translation

12 Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. 13 I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth.14 When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, 15 and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. 16 When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth.” 17 Then God said to Noah, “Yes, this rainbow is the sign of the covenant I am confirming with all the creatures on earth.”

Explain – God made an eternal covenant with all the creatures in the earth.  God promised never again to use flood waters to destroy all life.

Apply – God’s sign to us, the rainbow, is a remembrance of His promises and provisions in our life for all generations.  We should realize that before the flood it was a very different world.  There was no rain, no mountains, or oceans like we have today.  The great flood changed the entire earth.  Different groups have adopted the rainbow as their symbol of their rebellious and sinful lifestyle or some have adopted it as a marketing tactic.  When we look at a rainbow, we can clearly see God’s beauty in His creation.  People often share pictures of sunsets and rainbows as wonders to behold; these are creations of God.  Remember the reason for the great worldwide flood was because of the sinful and rebellious people who reaped the judgment of God.  Now today this lost generation is also in rebellion to the Lord God that loves them so much that He made a provision to be set free of sin.

Ezekiel 1:28 ESV Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

Revelation 4:3 ESV And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.

Isaiah 54:8-10 ESV In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer. “This is like the days of Noah to me: as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, and will not rebuke you. For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Deuteronomy 7:9 ESV

Respond - Lord, thank You for my life, for my salvation.  Thank You, Lord, for Your rainbow, the sign of Your love and provision for us. I strive to abide in You as You abide in me, faithfully and obediently following You to the end.  I pray for those that do not know You or are in rebellion against You, Lord, that they come to You, in Jesus name.  Amen.
