Highlight Exodus 13:20-22 New Living Translation
20 The Israelites left Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness.
21 The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night. 22 And the Lord did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.
Explain – God provided a pillar of cloud through the daytime and a pillar of fire throughout the night to lead them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud blocked the harmful sun rays and provided clear direction for all to follow. The pillar of fire provided warmth and also provided clear direction for all to follow.
Apply – God has provided us His Word, the Bible as well as the Holy Spirit to provide us guidance and direction in our journey of life. Like the Israelites, we can wisely faithfully follow God’s direction or we can foolishly try to follow our own thinking.

Respond – Lord, I thank You for Your promises and for permitting me to serve You in accomplishing Your will. I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently forever. I pray for those with hardened hearts that they will accept You as lord and savior. Amen.
