HEAR Journaling - Exodus 32
Highlight – Exodus 32:11-14 New Living Translation
11 But Moses tried to pacify the Lord his God. “O Lord!” he said. “Why are you so angry with your own people whom you brought from the land of Egypt with such great power and such a strong hand? 12 Why let the Egyptians say, ‘Their God rescued them with the evil intention of slaughtering them in the mountains and wiping them from the face of the earth’? Turn away from your fierce anger. Change your mind about this terrible disaster you have threatened against your people! 13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.[a] You bound yourself with an oath to them, saying, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven. And I will give them all of this land that I have promised to your descendants, and they will possess it forever.’” 14 So the Lord changed his mind about the terrible disaster he had threatened to bring on his people.
Explain – The people sinned against God by building a graven image, a calf, to worship rather than worshiping the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that had led them out of bondage. God had determined to kill all the rebellious people. Moses pleaded with God to change His mind and not kill the trespassers. Matthew Henry, in his commentary on Exodus Chapter 32 notes two points:
IV. God graciously abated the rigour of the sentence, and repented of the evil he thought to do (v. 14); though he designed to punish them, yet he would not ruin them. See here,
1. The power of prayer; God suffers himself to be prevailed with by the humble believing importunity of intercessors.
2. The compassion of God towards poor sinners, and how ready he is to forgive. Thus he has given other proofs besides his own oath that he has no pleasure in the death of those that die; for he not only pardons upon the repentance of sinners, but spares and reprieves upon the intercession of others for them.

Apply – We see that God hears the prayers of faithful righteous intercessors with great love and compassion. We can learn to grow in the Lord to become faithful and effective intercessors that can accomplish much through His power.
James 5:16 ESV Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
1 John 5:14 ESV And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

John 9:31 ESV

Ephesians 6:18 ESV
Respond – Lord, thank You for saving me. Thank You Lord for Your love and compassion. I strive to follow You faithfully and obediently, always forever. Help me Lord to pray to You effectively. I pray that anyone that does not know You will come to a saving revelation and relationship with You, Amen.
