Highlight - 1 Corinthians 14 New Living Translation
14 Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. 2 For if you have the ability to speak in tongues,[a] you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit,[b] but it will all be mysterious.3 But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. 4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.
…20 Dear brothers and sisters, don’t be childish in your understanding of these things. Be innocent as babies when it comes to evil, but be mature in understanding matters of this kind. 21 It is written in the Scriptures[f]:
“I will speak to my own people through strange languages and through the lips of foreigners.But even then, they will not listen to me,”[g] says the Lord.
Explain – Paul explains that there are different spiritual gifts and emphasizes the gift of prophesy. Prophesy is a gift where one person hears from God and delivers that message to another person or group of people. The Bible itself is a collection of prophesy. There is also an office of a “Prophet” who is the prophet for a congregation, but there are prophets that deliver messages as the Holy Spirit directs. Paul was directing the believers in Corinth to seek to prophesy. He also cautioned them not to be childish in their understanding but to seek mature understanding of spiritual gifts.
Apply – There is much misinformation, confusion, and controversy with spiritual gifts, particularly with speaking in tongues and prophesy. This is no mystery; the enemy does not want God’s people to know about and operate in God’s spiritual gifts. Per Pauls’ direction, let us not be childish in our understanding. There are at least seven different kinds of spiritual tongues and also other prophetical giftings to learn about. We should seek God for His truth and not rely on our own misunderstandings. Wouldn’t it be tragic to miss out on a special spiritual gifting from God because we believed some lie?
Respond – Lord, please help me gain wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and Your instruction concerning Your spiritual gifts, and in particular the spiritual gifts that You have imparted to me, so that I may be all I can be in You for Your glory and honor. I rebuke the liar and deceiver that will try to undermine my effectiveness in You.
