HEAR Journaling - Matthew Chapter 10
Highlight – Matthew 10:16-20 New Living Translation
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles
16 “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. 17 But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. 18 You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.[e] 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. 20 For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Explain – Matthew Chapter 10 begins with a list of the disciples in verses 2-4 and followed with the instructions and warnings that Jesus gave His disciples before sending them out two by two. Verses 16-20 has a caution; He says that they were being sent out as sheep among the wolves. They were to be shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. They were told that some will stand trial and be whipped and flogged. They were to use the opportunity to share the Gospel with rulers and other unbelievers. Jesus said not to worry as the Holy Spirit of God would tell them what to say when the time was right. Note that even Judas Iscariot who would betray Jesus was among the twelve that had been called for this work.
Apply – God had a mighty calling for the disciples. It is easy to understand how anxious the disciples may have been under these circumstances. We must realize that every believer has a calling on their life. We must seek Him, abide in Him and with Him so that we can effectively serve in the calling He has for us. We too must rely on the Holy Spirit to lead us, to provide the wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and instruction that we need to be successful.
Jeremiah 1:5 ESV “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
2 Peter 1:10-11 ESV Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
2 Timothy 1:9 ESV Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
Acts 2:38-39 ESV And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Respond - Lord help me to be all that I can be in You, a worthy and effective servant for Your good works. I strive to follow You faithfully and apply Your wisdom, knowledge, understanding and instruction as You direct. In Jesus name, Amen.
