HEAR Journaling - Matthew Chapter 12
Highlight – Matthew 12 New Living Translation
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
9 Then Jesus went over to their synagogue, 10 where he noticed a man with a deformed hand. The Pharisees asked Jesus, “Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?” (They were hoping he would say yes, so they could bring charges against him.) 11 And he answered, “If you had a sheep that fell into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you work to pull it out? Of course you would. 12 And how much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Yes, the law permits a person to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored, just like the other one! 14 Then the Pharisees called a meeting to plot how to kill Jesus.
Explain – The Pharisees were trying to trick and trap Jesus because He was a threat, they thought, to their power and authority. The tempted Jesus to perform a healing on the Sabbath, a sin in their minds. Jesus first challenged their thinking by explaining that there is acceptable work to be done on the Sabbath, that their thinking was flawed. Then Jesus healed the deformed hand. The Pharisee response was to plot to kill Jesus.
Apply - Jesus came so that all could be saved. He loved the Pharisees just as much as anyone, but they were blind to the Truth that stood before them. They knew the scriptures like Isaiah Chapter 53 that prophesied of the coming Messiah. Jesus clearly satisfied the prophecies, but the Pharisees could only see the potential threat to their power and influence.
There are people today that are blind to God’s Truth. The evidence is clear, but they resist to their own peril. These people are struggling to make their best life in this world system oblivious that this life is temporary, that our life eternal with Jesus is only possible if we accept Him as savior.
John 3:16 ESV “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Acts 4:12 ESV And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
John 3:3 ESV 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again[b] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Romans 6:23 ESV For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Respond – Lord, thank You for revealing Your Truth to me. I praise and honor You for my salvation and Your free gift for whosoever will accept You. I pray for those that have not yet accepted You as Savior that they will seek You, find You, and abide with You through eternity. Amen.
