HEAR Journaling - Matthew Chapter 13
Highlight – Matthew 13:10-17 New Living Translation
10 His disciples came and asked him, “Why do you use parables when you talk to the people?”
11 He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets[a] of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not. 12 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them. 13 That is why I use these parables,
For they look, but they don’t really see. They hear, but they don’t really listen or understand.
14 This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says, ‘When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend. 15 For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes—so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.’[b] 16 “But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17 I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.
Explain – Jesus shared several parables in Matthew Chapter 13. In Verse 10 the disciples asked Jesus why he spoke in parables. He explained that He used parables to reveal secrets of heaven to those who would listen, that they would be granted more understanding and would gain an abundance of knowledge. Jesus said that this was a prophesy of Isaiah (Isaiah 6:9-10) that people with hardened hearts could not understand or comprehend the things of God. He told the disciples that they were blessed because they could see and hear the message found in the parables.
Apply - We too can see, hear, understand, and comprehend the things of God after we are saved and filled with His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit resides within us and reveals His Truth to us.
John 14:26 ESV But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 16:13 ESV When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
Romans 8:26 ESV Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
John 14:17 ESV Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Respond – Lord, thank You for my salvation. Thank You Holy Spirit for residing in me and revealing Your Truth to me. I pray for those that have not yet accepted You as Savior that they will seek You, find You, and abide with You through eternity. Amen.
